Maintenance Technician
The Maintenance Technician helps maintain production and quality of Southwest Steel’s equipment, machinery, and facility by conducting repairs and preventive maintenance services. Services may be emergency/unscheduled repairs or scheduled maintenance or repairs of production equipment during off hours. Skills may include, but may not be limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic repair of production line equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, welding equipment, packaging, and miscellaneous machinery. Able to read and interpret work orders to perform required maintenance and service and may refer to equipment manuals as necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines by following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer’s instructions, and engineering specifications under the direction of maintenance mechanic or maintenance supervision
  • Monitor performance of assigned equipment
  • Remove defective parts by dismantling devices using hoists, cranes, and hand and power tools
  • Learn dimensional requirements of parts by inspection under direction of trained maintenance personnel using rules, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments and adjusts parts and control instruments by using hand tools and measuring devices
  • Maintain equipment, parts, and supply inventories by periodically checking stock to determine inventory level
  • Learn to anticipate needed equipment, parts, and supplies by working with experienced mechanic or technician
  • Place orders and verify receipt of ordered items
  • Under the direction of maintenance mechanic or supervisor, apply working knowledge to improve maintenance techniques and operations
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Comply specifically with all OSHA safety and health rules
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent, and one year of previous maintenance experience preferred
  • Dependable, reliable, and mature enough to handle equipment in a safe and sensible manner
  • Able to work for extended hours in a physically challenging environment; physically fit
  • General aptitude or ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and electronic systems and circuitry
  • General ability to read, understand, and use concepts from mechanical, hydraulic, electrical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing, if necessary, with maintenance supervisory personnel, production supervisors, and inspectors
  • General basic knowledge of industrial machinery operation
  • General knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and systems
Shop Leadman

Job Summary:

The Shop Leadman is responsible for production for each production line or area assigned. Responsible for the safety, productivity, and security of all production employees staffed on a designated shift. Accountable for ensuring production scheduled for completion is executed in a timely manner and within all quality parameters. Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of machinery, and plant or bay fixtures.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the production process following outlined production schedule
  • Ensure efficiency and performance goals are met or exceeded
  • Ensure all safety and health guidelines and rules are enforced and practiced by department’s employees
  • Supervise, train, and mentor all new employees and continue to coach all existing employees
  • Review the performance of subordinates; assisting them to make improvements where needed
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Facilitate effective communication between employees and management
  • Investigate, document, and, where applicable, discipline incidents which are violations of Southwest Steel’s policies, procedures; and rules with particular attention to violations of any Southwest Steel safety rules
  • Work with supervisor to determine human and material resource needs for department or line
  • Ensure prescribed line and lifting device preventative maintenance is completed in a timely manner
  • Know skill levels of subordinates and provide leadership and development where required to improve department or line capabilities
  • Perform other duties as required

Requirements:

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent, and 3 – 5 years of Fitter | Welder experience and previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Dependable, reliable, and mature enough to safely manage a team of employees
  • Able to work for extended hours in a physically challenging environment; physically fit
  • Sound technical welding and blueprint skills and an aptitude to supervise individuals and/or teams of welders and Fitter | Welders
  • Able to read blueprints, understand and use concepts related to shop manufacturing, and effectively use skilled employees to safely accomplish department and line production goals
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing, if necessary, with subordinates, coworkers, inspectors, and maintenance personnel
  • Demonstrate ability to supervise employees and production processes
  • Able to set priorities, identify and address problems, meet deadlines and stay within allotted hours and budget

Welder

Job Summary:

Welders understand and apply the process to lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as building members, columns, joists, frames, stairs, railings and other parts, using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment
  • Certified with both stick and wire in vertical position
  • Observe tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications
  • Learn to inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments
  • Remove rough spots from work piece using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
  • Heat, form, and dress metal parts using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment
  • Ignite torch and adjust valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc
  • Learn to develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts
  • Learn to determine required equipment and welding method; apply knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques
  • Move structural elements by hand and machine through the use of chain rigging, overhead/jib crane, material conveyor, or transfer stations and other material handling equipment
  • Inspect equipment, structural components, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Able to work on product alongside Fitter | Welder
  • Able to perform end prep

Job Summary:

Currently, we are broadening our search for experienced Project Managers. Required education, competencies and skills are:

  • Construction Management or Engineering Degree (Civil/Structural Discipline).
  • Minimum of 5 years of steel construction related project management involvement (set-up, budget assignment, schedule development, project controls (drawings, costs and milestones), in-house staff direction, financial flows, contract compliance, field direction, sub-trade and vendor management.)
  • Proficient in managing multiple projects at various stages at any given time.
  • Skillful in clear and effective communication between general contractors, numerous departments, vendors, sub-trades, in-house management and shop or field crafts.
Responsibilities assigned for Project Manager encompass:
  • Full responsibility for strength in performance on contracted projects encompassing financial, program, quality, safety and client relationship aspects.
  • Authority to prepare and negotiate change order requests beyond original scope.
